and the attributes inherent in them. These assertions (1) and others like them are among the offenses that speculative theologians have committed against the Sharia and attributed to it, though it is innocent of them. Their only basis is that entities share a general characteristic, but this does not make them equal in their intrinsic nature, for different things may share a general characteristic while differing in their intrinsic attributes.

Allah has never made the intrinsic nature of musk equal to that of urine, nor that of water equal to that of fire. The disparity between noble places and their opposites, and between noble entities and their opposites, is far greater than this. The difference in intrinsic nature between Moses and Pharaoh (2) is greater than that between musk and excrement. Likewise, the disparity between the Kaaba itself and the house of Satan (3) is far greater than this disparity (4). How, then, can the two sites (5) be regarded as equal in their intrinsic nature, with superiority attributed to the acts of worship, remembrance of Allah, and supplications performed there?!

We have not intended to offer an exhaustive refutation of this rejected, contemptible doctrine, but only to describe it. We leave judgment to the discerning and rational; Allah and His servants pay no heed whatsoever to anyone else. Allah, glorified be He, never singles anything out, grants it superiority, or favors it except on account of a quality that warrants

(1) All witnesses except Qāf and Nūn read “al-umūr (matters).” In Sād, an insertion mark appears after it, and the margin reads “wa-l-aqāwīl sahh (and assertions—correct),” indicating that the exemplar against which the manuscript was collated read “al-umūr wa-l-aqāwīl (matters and assertions).” The variant “al-aqāwīl (assertions)” is also recorded in the margin of ‘Ayn. (2) Thus in all the manuscripts; the intended meaning is “wa-dhāt Fir‘awn (and the intrinsic nature of Pharaoh).” (3) The printed editions read “al-sultān (the ruler),” a textual corruption. (4) All witnesses except Sād and Jīm add “aydan (also)” after it. (5) Nūn reads “al-buq‘āt (the sites).” Kāf and ‘Ayn read “al-naqīdān (the two opposites),” which may be a textual corruption.
