and places, and claim that none of these has any merit over another, and that it is merely a preference without any grounds for preferring one over another. This view is false on more (1) than forty grounds, which have been discussed elsewhere (2).
Merely to conceive of this false doctrine is enough to see its invalidity. For it holds that the Messengers are, in their intrinsic nature, no different from their enemies, and that their superiority is due only to something unrelated to their possessing distinctive qualities and merits that others lack. Likewise, all places are intrinsically alike, with no place having any merit whatsoever over another; their distinction comes only from the righteous deeds performed there. Thus, the sites of the House, the Sacred Mosque, Minā, ʿArafah, and the sacred pilgrimage sites have no merit over any other place on earth you might name. Their superiority rests solely on something external to the place itself, unrelated either to it or to any quality inherent in it (3).
Allah, glorified be He, has refuted this false view in His words:
“And when a sign comes to them, they say, ‘We will not believe until we are given the like of what Allah’s messengers were given.’”
The Most High says:
“Allah knows best where to place His message (4).” [al-Anʿām: 124]
That is, not everyone is qualified or fit to bear His messages (5). Rather, His messages have particular recipients: they befit none but them and are suited only (6) to them,
