Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

By Allah, how many has she left slain, despoiled, or wounded! How much wealth and how many lives have been spent out of love for her! The lover willingly parts with his beloved children, family, loved ones, and homeland, facing every kind of fear, mortal danger, peril, and hardship. Yet he finds all this delightful and pleasant and—if love’s power should prevail in his heart—regards it as sweeter than the comforts of those who stay behind (1), their ease (2), and their pleasures.

He is no lover who counts his suffering
As torment when it pleases his beloved (3).

All this is the secret behind His ascribing it to Himself, glorified be He, in His words:

“and purify My House” [al-Hajj: 26].

This special attribution gives rise to all this reverence, veneration, and love (4), just as His ascribing His servant and Messenger to Himself gives rise to the same. Likewise, His ascribing His believing servants to Himself clothes them in love, honour (5), and dignity. Thus, everything that the Lord Most High ascribes to Himself possesses a distinction and special standing above others that warranted its being chosen and selected. Through this attribution, He then bestows upon it further favour, distinction, and honour beyond what it possessed before that attribution.

This meaning has not been understood by those who equate entities, deeds, and times

(1) Qāf: “al-mutakhalliyah”; the printed editions read: “ni‘am al-mutahalliyah.” (2) Sād and Jīm: “tarafuhum (their luxury).” (3) The verse is vocalized this way in Jīm, Qāf, and Kāf; I have not located its source. (4) See also Badā’i‘ al-Fawā’id (2:461–462) and Rawdat al-Muhibbīn (p. 379). (5) ‘Ayn and Kāf: “al-mahabbah wa-l-ijlāl (love and reverence).” Mīm-Bā’: “al-mahabbah wa-l-jalāl (love and majesty).” Qāf: “al-jalālah wa-l-mahabbah (honour and love).”
