Likewise, He chose his Companions from among all people, and from among them He chose the earliest forerunners, those who participated in Badr, and those who took the Pledge of Ridwān. He chose for them the most complete religion, the finest religious laws, and the most virtuous (2) and purest character.
He chose the nation of the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—over all other nations, as related in the Musnad of Imam Ahmad and elsewhere (3), in the hadith narrated by Bahz ibn Hakīm ibn Mu‘āwiya ibn Hayda, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said:
“You complete (4) the number of seventy nations; you are the best of them and the most honoured by Allah.”
Alī ibn al-Madīnī and Ahmad said: The hadith of Bahz ibn Hakīm, from his father, from his grandfather, is sound (5).
The effects of this divine choice became evident in their deeds, their character, their affirmation of Allah’s oneness, their ranks in Paradise, and their standing at the gathering on the Day of Resurrection; for they will stand higher than the other people, on a hill above them
