Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

When he awoke, he would say: “Praise be to Allah, who has brought us to life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection” (1).

‘Ā’ishah said: When he awoke during the night, he would proclaim Allah’s greatness ten times, say “Glory and praise be to Allah” ten times and “Glory be to the Sovereign, the Most Holy” ten times, seek Allah’s forgiveness ten times, and say “There is no god but Allah” ten times. He would then say, “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the distress of this world and the distress of the Day of Resurrection” ten times, then begin the prayer (2).

She also said: When he awoke during the night, he would say: “There is no god but Allah. Glory be to You! O Allah, I seek Your forgiveness for my sin and ask You for Your mercy. O Allah, increase me in knowledge, do not let my heart deviate after You have guided me, and grant me mercy from Yourself. Indeed, You are the Bestower” (3). Both were recorded by Abū

(1) Recorded by al-Bukhārī (6325) from Abū Dharr, may Allah be pleased with him, and by Muslim (2711) from al-Barā’, may Allah be pleased with him. (2) Recorded by Abū Dāwūd (5085), al-Bukhārī in al-Tārīkh al-Kabīr (The Great History), 1:457, al-Nasā’ī in al-Kubrā (The Major Collection), no. 10641, and Ibn al-Sunnī in ‘Amal al-Yawm wa-l-Laylah (Daily and Nightly Devotions), p. 686, through Baqiyyah ibn al-Walīd, from ‘Umar ibn Ja‘tham, from al-Azhar al-Harāzī, from Sharīf al-Hawzanī, from ‘Ā’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her. The possibility of tadlīs (concealment in transmission) by Baqiyyah is ruled out by his explicit statement of direct transmission in the sources other than Abū Dāwūd. Sharīf, however, is an unknown narrator. Mu‘āwiyah ibn Sālih’s transmission differs from Baqiyyah’s in Abū Dāwūd (766) and elsewhere: he transmits it from al-Azhar al-Harāzī, from ‘Āsim ibn Humayd, from ‘Ā’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her. Its wording is: “He would proclaim Allah’s greatness ten times, glorify Him ten times, declare that there is no god but Allah ten times, seek forgiveness ten times, and say: ‘O Allah, forgive me, guide me, provide for me, and grant me well-being. I seek refuge in Allah from the distress of standing on the Day of Resurrection.’” This version is authentic; its sources and chains of transmission were discussed in detail earlier (1:237).
