On his guidance, peace and blessings be upon him, concerning naming and circumcising a newborn
His words in the hadith concerning the birth sacrifice, narrated by Qatādah from al-Hasan, from Samurah, have already been cited: “The sacrifice is slaughtered on his seventh day, and he is given a name” (1). Al-Maymūnī (2) said: “We discussed how soon a boy should be named. Abū ʿAbd Allāh told us: ‘It is reported from Anas that he is named on the night of his birth (3), whereas Samurah said that he is named on the seventh day (4).’”
As for circumcision, Ibn ʿAbbās said: “They would not circumcise a boy until he reached puberty” (5).
Al-Maymūnī said: “I heard Ahmad say: ‘Al-Hasan disliked having a boy circumcised on his seventh day’” (6).
Hanbal said that Abū ʿAbd Allāh stated: “There is no harm in circumcising him on the seventh day. Al-Hasan disliked it only to avoid resembling the Jews, and there is nothing to this” (7).
