Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

Section

Another error was the belief of Tāwūs and others that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) went from Minā to the House every night during his stay there. Al-Bukhārī said in his Sahīh (1): “It is related from Abū Hassān, from Ibn 'Abbās, that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) used to visit the House during the days spent at Minā.”

Ibn 'Ar'arah also narrated it (2), saying: “Mu'ādh ibn Hishām handed us a written text and said, ‘I heard it from my father,’ but he did not read it out. It contained a report from Abū Hassān, from Ibn 'Abbās, that the Prophet of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) used to visit the House every night while staying at Minā.” He added: “I have not seen anyone agree with him on this.” End of quotation. Al-Thawrī also narrated it in his al-Jāmi' (Collection), from Ibn Tāwūs, from his father, who attributed it directly to the Prophet without naming an intermediary (3).

This is an error, for after the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) had performed the main Hajj circumambulation and returned to Minā, he did not return to Mecca until his farewell. And Allah knows best.

Section

Other errors include the claim that he performed the farewell circumambulation twice, and the claim that his route into and out of Mecca formed a complete circle: he spent the night at Dhū Tuwā, then entered Mecca from its upper end, left from its lower end, and returned to al-Muhassab on the right-hand side of Mecca, thus completing the circle.

Another error is the claim that he moved from al-Muhassab to the back of al-'Aqabah.

All these are errors, which we have pointed out both in detail and in summary. Success comes through Allah alone.

(1) Al-Bukhārī cited it with an incomplete chain of transmission (3/567). Al-Tahāwī in Sharh mushkil al-āthār (1567), al-Bayhaqī (5/146), and others transmitted it with a connected, authentic chain through Ibn 'Ar'arah. The hadith is authentic. See al-Silsilah al-sahīhah (804). (2) Reported by al-Bayhaqī (5/146). (3) Al-Bayhaqī (5/146) cited it from al-Thawrī.
