Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn al-Qāsim, from his father, from her (1). Her words were then transmitted in paraphrase, and it was said that he delayed the circumambulation of visitation until nightfall.

Section

Another error is the claim that he performed the circumambulation of visitation twice: once during the day, and once with his wives at night. The basis of this error is the report transmitted by ‘Amr (2) ibn Qays, from ‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn al-Qāsim, from his father, from ‘Ā’ishah: the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) gave his Companions permission to visit the House, and they did so at midday on the Day of Sacrifice, while the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) visited it with his wives at night (3). This is mistaken. The authentic report from ‘Ā’ishah states the opposite: he performed the circumambulation of visitation only once, during the day. This is a most pernicious method (4), followed by those whose knowledge is shallow and who cling to its fringes. And Allah knows best.

Section

Another error is the claim that he performed the arrival circumambulation on the Day of Sacrifice, followed by the circumambulation of visitation. The basis of this claim and its invalidity have already been explained.

Another error is the claim that he also performed the sa‘y (5)—the passage between Safā and Marwah—in conjunction with this circumambulation that day, citing this as evidence that someone combining Hajj and ‘umrah must perform sa‘y twice. It has already been explained that this report about him is incorrect, and that he performed sa‘y only once, as stated by ‘Ā’ishah and Jābir.

(1) Reported by Ahmad (24592), Abū Dāwūd (1973), Ibn Hibbān (3868), and others through this chain of transmission. It is a hasan (good) hadith. (2) This is the reading in all manuscript copies. Al-Bayhaqī (5/144) has “ʿUmar,” which is correct. (3) Its source references have already been given. (4) “Jiddan” (“very”) is absent from K. (5) K, J: “saʿā yawmaʾidhin” (“performed saʿy—the passage between Safā and Marwah—that day”).
