This is an obvious error, for he said that only (1) after returning to Medina from his Hajj. He asked Umm Sinān al-Ansāriyyah, “What prevented you from performing Hajj with us?” She replied, “We had only two camels for drawing water (2). My child’s father and my son performed Hajj on one camel, leaving us the other to draw water with.” He said, “When Ramadan comes, perform umrah, for an umrah in Ramadan is equivalent to a Hajj.” This is how Muslim narrated it in his Sahīh (3).
He likewise said this to Umm Ma‘qil after returning to Medina, as Abū Dāwūd narrated (4) from Yūsuf ibn ‘Abd Allāh ibn Salām, from his grandmother Umm Ma‘qil, who said:
“When the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, performed the Farewell Pilgrimage, we had a camel which Abū Ma‘qil had dedicated to the cause of Allah. We fell ill, Abū Ma‘qil died, and the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, set out. When he had finished (5), I came to him, and he asked, ‘What prevented you from setting out with us?’ I replied, ‘We had made our preparations, but Abū Ma‘qil died. We had a camel on which we used to perform Hajj, but Abū Ma‘qil bequeathed it to the cause of Allah.’ He said, ‘Why did you not set out on it? Hajj too is in the cause of Allah. Since you missed this Hajj with us, perform umrah in Ramadan, for it is a Hajj (6).’”
