As for the third question—where he, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, performed the dawn prayer on the morning (1) following the night of departure—the two Sahīh collections (2) report that Umm Salamah said: “I complained to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, that I was unwell. He said, ‘Circumambulate behind the people while riding.’” She said: “So I circumambulated while the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was praying beside the House, reciting, ‘By the Mount, and by a Book inscribed.’”
This could have been during the dawn prayer (3) or another prayer, and during the farewell circumambulation or another circumambulation. We therefore examined the matter and found that al-Bukhārī had narrated in his Sahīh (4), in this account, that when he, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, intended to depart, Umm Salamah had not yet circumambulated the House and also wished to leave. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, told her: “When the dawn prayer begins, circumambulate on your camel while the people are praying.” She did so and did not pray until she had left (5). This certainly could not have taken place on the Day of Sacrifice; it was therefore undoubtedly the farewell circumambulation. Thus, it becomes clear that he performed the dawn prayer beside the House that day, and that Umm Salamah heard him reciting Sūrat al-Tūr during it.
