Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

his feet touch the ground until he reached Jam‘ (1).” The apparent meaning is that, from the time he departed with him until he returned, his feet never touched the ground (2). This is not contradicted by the two units of prayer following circumambulation, for their circumstances (3) are well known.

I say: It appears that ‘Amr ibn al-Sharīd (4) meant only the departure with him from ‘Arafah. That is why he said, “until he reached Jam‘,” which is Muzdalifah (5). He did not mean proceeding to the House on the Day of Sacrifice. Nor is this contradicted by his dismounting at the mountain pass, when (6) he urinated and then remounted: he did not dismount to remain there; his feet merely touched the ground momentarily.

He then returned to Minā. There is disagreement over where he prayed the noon prayer that day. In the two Sahīh collections (7), Ibn ‘Umar reported that he, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, proceeded to the House on the Day of Sacrifice, then returned and prayed the noon prayer at Minā.

In Sahīh Muslim (8), Jābir reported that he prayed the noon prayer in Mecca. This was also stated by

(1) Reported by Ahmad (19465), from the hadith of al-Sharīd, and graded authentic by the editors of al-Musnad (19465). (2) “Hattā atā … al-ard” (“until he reached … the ground”) is omitted in s owing to an eye-skip. (3) k, s, j: “sha’nahā” (“its circumstances”). (4) This is the reading in all manuscripts, indicating that the error originated with the author. It was corrected in the printed edition. (5) “Wa-hiya Muzdalifah” (“which is Muzdalifah”) is absent from k. (6) k: “hattā” (“until”). (7) I found it only in Muslim (1308/335). (8) Jābir’s hadith is reported by Muslim (1218/147). ‘Ā’ishah’s hadith is reported by Ahmad (24592) and Abū Dāwūd (1973). It is authentic, although some of its wording is anomalous. See Sahīh Abī Dāwūd—al-Umm (6/213).
