rejecting reports from narrators who conceal intermediaries until continuity of transmission is established, or accepting them until a break in transmission is established, applies only when they are not contradicted by a report whose authenticity is beyond doubt (1). This report, however, is contradicted by one whose authenticity is beyond doubt. Here his words end.
His error in narrating from ‘Ā’ishah (2) is further demonstrated by Abū Salamah ibn ‘Abd al-Rahmān’s report from her that she said: “We performed Hajj with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and performed the circumambulation on the Day of Sacrifice” (3).
Muhammad ibn Ishāq narrated from ‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn al-Qāsim, from his father, from her: [“The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, performed the circumambulation in the latter part of the day, when he prayed Zuhr, then returned to Minā.”
‘Umar ibn Qays narrated it from ‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn al-Qāsim, from al-Qāsim ibn Muhammad, from ‘Ā’ishah:] (4) that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, gave his Companions permission to visit the House, so they visited it at midday on the Day of Sacrifice, while the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, visited it with his wives at night (5). This, too, is an error.
Al-Bayhaqī said (6): “The most authentic of these reports are the report of Nāfi‘ from Ibn ‘Umar, the report of Jābir, and the report of Abū Salamah from ‘Ā’ishah.” He means that the Prophet performed the circumambulation during the daytime.
