Dāwūd (1), from Alī, who said: “When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, slaughtered his sacrificial camels, he slaughtered thirty with his own hand, then instructed me to slaughter the rest”?
We reply: This is an error in which the narrator reversed the figures, for it was Alī who slaughtered thirty. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, slaughtered seven with his own hand, without either Alī or Jābir witnessing him. He then slaughtered another sixty-three, leaving thirty (2) of the hundred, which Alī slaughtered. Thus, the narrator confused the number slaughtered by Alī with the number slaughtered by the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
If it is asked: What, then, do you make of the hadith of Abd Allāh ibn Qurt (3), who reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “The greatest day in Allah’s sight is the Day of Sacrifice, followed by the Day of al-Qarr (4)”? This is the second day. He continued: “Five sacrificial camels were brought to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and they began (5) drawing close to him, each seeking to be the first. When they had fallen on their sides, he spoke quietly, saying something I did not understand. I asked, ‘What did he say?’ He replied, ‘Whoever wishes may cut off a portion’” (6).
