Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

Section

He, peace and blessings be upon him, stood at his chosen spot and informed the people that all of Muzdalifah was a place for standing. He then set out from Muzdalifah with al-Fadl ibn ‘Abbās riding behind him, reciting the talbiyah (pilgrimage invocation) as he travelled. Usāmah ibn Zayd went on foot among those of Quraysh who went ahead.

On that journey, he instructed Ibn ‘Abbās to pick up seven pebbles for him (1) for stoning the pillars. He did not break them off the mountain that night, as those without knowledge do, nor did he gather them at night. Ibn ‘Abbās gathered seven small pebbles of the kind flicked between the fingers. He began shaking them in his palm, saying:

“Throw pebbles like (2) these, and beware of excess in religion, for it was excess in religion that destroyed those before you.” (3)

On that journey, a beautiful woman from Khath‘am approached him and asked about performing Hajj on behalf of her father, who was an elderly man unable to remain seated securely on his mount. He instructed her to perform Hajj on his behalf. Al-Fadl began looking at her (4), so the Prophet placed his hand on al-Fadl’s face and turned it to the other side (5). Al-Fadl was handsome. It was said that he turned his face away to prevent her from looking at him; it was also said that he did so to prevent him from looking at her.

(1) Manuscripts kāf, sād, and jīm read “lahum (for them).” The adopted reading is from qāf, mīm-bā’, and mīm. (2) The printed edition reads “bi-amthāl (with the like of),” contrary to the manuscripts. Both readings occur in the transmitted reports. (3) Reported by Ahmad (1851), al-Nasā’ī (3057), and Ibn Mājah (3029), from Ibn ‘Abbās, may Allah be pleased with them both. The hadith was graded authentic by Ibn Khuzaymah (2867), Ibn Hibbān (3871), al-Hākim (1/466), Ibn Taymiyyah in al-Iqtidā’ (1/327), and al-Albānī in al-Silsilah al-Sahīhah (1283). (4) The printed edition adds after this: “wa-tanzuru ilayhi (and she was looking at him).” This is absent from all the manuscripts, although it occurs in the transmitted account, as will be seen below. (5) Reported by al-Bukhārī (1513) and Muslim (1334), from Ibn ‘Abbās, may Allah be pleased with them both.
