That night, he permitted the weaker members of his household to proceed to Minā before dawn. This was when the moon had set. He instructed them not to stone the pillar until sunrise. This is an authentic hadith, authenticated by al-Tirmidhī (1) and others.
As for the hadith of ‘Ā’ishah, “The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—sent Umm Salamah ahead on the night before the Day of Sacrifice. She stoned the pillar before dawn, then went on to perform the pilgrimage circumambulation. That was the day when the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—was to stay”—meaning, with her—reported by Abū Dāwūd (2), it is a rejected report, rejected by Imam Ahmad and others. One indication of its objectionable nature is that it states that the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—instructed her to arrive in Mecca for the dawn prayer on the Day of Sacrifice. Another version states that she was to meet him; it was her allotted day, so he wished her to meet him (3). This is utterly impossible.
Al-Athram (4) said: “Abū ‘Abd Allāh told me (5): ‘Abū Mu‘āwiyah narrated to us, from Hishām, from his father, from Zaynab bint Umm Salamah, from Umm Salamah (6), that the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—instructed her to meet him
