Hajj until the Day of Resurrection.” He was asked: “Is this ‘umrah of ours for this year alone, or for all time?” He replied: “No (1), rather for ever and ever. ‘Umrah has become part of Hajj until the Day of Resurrection” (2).

Their question concerned ‘umrah performed by converting Hajj into ‘umrah, as is explicitly stated in Jābir’s lengthy hadith (3). He said: When he reached Marwah on the final circuit (4), he said: “If I had known beforehand what I now know, I would not have brought the sacrificial animals, and I would have made it ‘umrah. Whoever among you has no sacrificial animal with him should leave the state of ritual consecration and make it ‘umrah.” Surāqah ibn Mālik then stood up and asked: “O Messenger of Allah, is this for this year alone, or for all time?” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, interlaced his fingers and said twice: “‘Umrah has become part of Hajj,” then said: “No, rather for ever and ever (5).”

In another wording (6): “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, arrived on the morning of the fourth of Dhū al-Hijjah and instructed us to leave the state of ritual consecration. He said: We then said (7), ‘With only five days remaining until ‘Arafah, he has instructed us to have intercourse with our wives, so that we will arrive at ‘Arafah with semen dripping from our penises.’” … He then related the hadith, which includes: Surāqah ibn Mālik asked: “Is this for this year alone, or for all time?” He replied: “For all time.”

(5) Sād reads: “li-abad abad (for ever and ever).” (6) Reported by Muslim (1216/141) from Jābir, may Allah be pleased with him. (7) This is the reading in the manuscripts; “qāla (he said)” is absent from the printed edition. The narration reads: “‘Atā said: He said, ‘Leave the state of ritual consecration and have intercourse with women …’; we then said.”
