‘Alī ibn ‘Abd al-‘Azīz al-Baghawī related (1): Hajjāj ibn al-Minhāl narrated to us, saying: Hammād ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Hammād ibn Abī Sulaymān or Humayd, from al-Hasan, that ‘Umar wanted to take the wealth of the Ka‘bah, saying, “The Ka‘bah has no need of this wealth.” He also wanted to forbid the people of Yemen from using urine in dyeing, and to forbid tamattu‘ in Hajj. Ubayy ibn Ka‘b said: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saw this wealth, and both he and his Companions needed it (2), yet he did not take it. So you must not take it either.
