Abū Muhammad said (1): “Moreover, someone better than ‘Urwah, more virtuous, more knowledgeable, more truthful, and more trustworthy has reported from the two of them (2) the opposite of what ‘Urwah said.” He then cited a report through al-Bazzār (3), from al-Ashajj, from ‘Abd Allāh ibn Idrīs al-Awdī, from Layth, from ‘Atā’ and Tāwūs, from Ibn ‘Abbās: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, Abū Bakr, and ‘Umar performed tamattu‘ (combining ‘umrah and Hajj). The first to forbid it was Mu‘āwiyah.”
He also cited a report through ‘Abd al-Razzāq (4), from al-Thawrī, from Layth, from Tāwūs, from Ibn ‘Abbās: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, performed tamattu‘, as did Abū Bakr until his death; ‘Umar and ‘Uthmān did likewise. The first to forbid it was Mu‘āwiyah.”
I say: This hadith of Ibn ‘Abbās was narrated by Imam Ahmad in al-Musnad and by al-Tirmidhī (5), who said: “It is a good hadith.”
‘Abd al-Razzāq related (6): “Ma‘mar narrated to us, from Ibn Tāwūs, from his father, who said: ‘Ubayy ibn Ka‘b and Abū Mūsā said to ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb: “Why do you not stand up and explain this tamattu‘ to the people?” ‘Umar replied: “Is there anyone left who does not know about it? As for me, I practise it.””
