The hadith master Abū Muhammad ibn Hazm said (1): “These two hadiths are highly objectionable.” He added: “Abū al-Aswad also has a report of this kind whose objectionable character, weakness, and invalidity are unmistakable. How astonishing that those who transmitted it failed to notice!”
He then cited, through al-Bukhārī (2), Abū al-Aswad’s report that ‘Abd Allāh, the client of Asmā’, told him that he used to hear Asmā’ bint Abī Bakr al-Siddīq say whenever she passed al-Hajūn:
“May Allah bless His Messenger! We camped here with him, having little with us at the time: few mounts and scant provisions. I performed ‘umrah, as did my sister ‘Ā’ishah, al-Zubayr, and so-and-so and so-and-so. Once we had circumambulated the House, we left consecration; then, that evening, we entered consecration for Hajj.”
He said (3): This is an error that cannot escape anyone with even the slightest knowledge of hadith, on account of two points in it (4) that are unquestionably false:
The first is the statement, “I performed ‘umrah, as did my sister ‘Ā’ishah.” There is no disagreement among the scholars of transmitted reports that ‘Ā’ishah did not perform ‘umrah when she first entered Mecca. For that reason (5), he had her perform ‘umrah from al-Tan‘īm after completing Hajj, on the night they camped at al-Hasbah. This is how Jābir ibn ‘Abd Allāh narrated it, and trustworthy narrators related it from ‘Ā’ishah, including Abū al-Aswad (6), Ibn Abī Mulaykah, al-Qāsim ibn Muhammad,
