As for the third justification—countering the hadiths concerning the conversion of Hajj into ‘umrah with reports indicating otherwise—they cited the report narrated by Muslim in his Sahīh (1), through al-Zuhrī, from ‘Urwah, from ‘Ā’ishah, who said:

“We set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the Farewell Pilgrimage. Some of us entered the state of consecration for ‘umrah, and some for Hajj. When we reached Mecca, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Whoever entered the state of consecration for ‘umrah without bringing a sacrificial animal should leave that state. Whoever entered it for ‘umrah and brought a sacrificial animal must not leave it until he slaughters his animal. Whoever entered it for Hajj should complete his Hajj.’” He then related the remainder of the hadith.

They also cited another report narrated in his Sahīh (2), through Mālik, from Abū al-Aswad, from ‘Urwah, from her:

“We set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the year of the Farewell Pilgrimage. Some of us entered the state of consecration for ‘umrah, some for Hajj and ‘umrah together (3), and some for Hajj. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the state of consecration for Hajj. Those who entered it for ‘umrah left that state, whereas those who entered it for Hajj, or combined Hajj and ‘umrah, did not leave it until the Day of Sacrifice.”

They also cited the report narrated by Ibn Abī Shaybah (4), who said: Muhammad ibn Bishr al-‘Abdī narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn ‘Amr ibn ‘Alqamah, who said: Yahyā ibn ‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn Hātib narrated to me, from ‘Ā’ishah, who said:

“We set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to perform Hajj in three different ways: some of us entered the state of consecration for ‘umrah and Hajj together, some for Hajj alone, and some for ‘umrah alone. Whoever entered it for Hajj and ‘umrah together remained subject to all the restrictions of consecration until he completed
