Husayn, for the two Sahīh collections (1) report, in al-Bukhārī’s wording: “We performed tamattu‘ with the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ, and the Quran was revealed. A man said whatever he wished on the basis of his own opinion.”
Muslim’s wording (2) is: “The verse concerning tamattu‘ was revealed in the Book of Allah, Mighty and Majestic—meaning tamattu‘ in Hajj—and the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ, commanded it. No verse was subsequently revealed abrogating tamattu‘ in Hajj, nor did the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ, prohibit it before he died. A man said whatever he wished on the basis of his own opinion.” Another wording (3) states: “He meant ‘Umar.”
‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Umar said to someone who asked him about it and told him that his father had prohibited it: “Is the Messenger (4) of Allah, ﷺ, more deserving of being followed, or my father?” (5).
Ibn ‘Abbās said to someone who opposed him on this matter by citing Abū Bakr and ‘Umar: “Stones are about to rain down upon you from heaven! I say, ‘The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ, said,’ while you say (6), ‘Abū Bakr and ‘Umar said’!” (7).
