Also in al-Bukhārī’s Sahīh (1), Jābir reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and his Companions entered ihram for Hajj … He related the hadith, which includes the following: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, instructed his Companions to make it an Umrah, circumambulate the House, and then shorten their hair, except those who had brought sacrificial animals. They said, “Are we to set out for Minā with our penises still dripping?” This reached the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and he said, “Had I known beforehand what I now know, I would not have brought sacrificial animals. Were it not for the sacrificial animals I have with me, I would have come out of ihram.”
In Sahīh Muslim (2), Jābir also reported concerning the Farewell Pilgrimage: When we reached Mecca, we circumambulated the Kaaba and went between al-Safā and al-Marwah. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then instructed those of us who had no sacrificial animals to come out of ihram. We asked, “Which restrictions are to be lifted?” He replied, “All of them.” So we had intercourse with our wives, applied perfume, and put on our regular clothes, although only four nights remained before the day of Arafah. We then entered ihram on the Day of al-Tarwiyah.
In another wording recorded by Muslim (3): “Whoever among you has no sacrificial animals should come out of ihram and make it an Umrah.” All the people came out of ihram and shortened their hair, except the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and those who had sacrificial animals with them. When the Day of al-Tarwiyah came, they set out for Minā and entered ihram for Hajj.
In Musnad al-Bazzār (4), Anas reported through an authentic chain of transmission that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and his Companions entered ihram for Hajj and Umrah. When they reached Mecca, they circumambulated the House and went between al-Safā and al-Marwah. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, instructed them to come out of ihram, but they were apprehensive about doing so. He said, “Come out of ihram. Were it not for the sacrificial animals I have with me, I would have come out of ihram.” They therefore came out of ihram, and intercourse with women became lawful for them.
