Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

peace and blessings be upon him, from Yemen, he found Fātimah wearing dyed clothes, having sprinkled the house with perfume (1). He asked, “What is the matter with you?” She replied, “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, instructed his Companions, and they came out of ihram.”

Ibn Abī Shaybah (2) said: Ibn Fudayl narrated to us, from Yazīd, from Mujāhid, who said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr said, “Perform Hajj alone, and disregard what this blind man of yours says.” ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās replied, “You are the one whose heart Allah has blinded! Why do you not ask your mother about this?” He sent someone to ask her, and she said, “Ibn ʿAbbās has spoken the truth. We came with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, to perform Hajj, but we changed it to Umrah and came completely out of ihram, so that incense burners sent up their fragrant smoke among the men and women.”

In Sahīh al-Bukhārī (3), Abū Shihāb (4) reported: I went to ʿAtā’ to ask him for a ruling. He said: Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh told me that he performed Hajj with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, when the Prophet brought sacrificial animals with him. They had entered ihram for Hajj alone, but he told them, “Come out of ihram by circumambulating the House, going between al-Safā and al-Marwah, and shortening your hair. Then remain out of ihram until the Day of al-Tarwiyah, when you should enter ihram for Hajj. Make the pilgrimage for which you arrived an Umrah followed by Hajj.” They asked, “How can we make it an Umrah followed by Hajj when we have declared our intention to perform Hajj?” He replied, “Do as I have instructed you. Had I not brought the sacrificial animals, I would have done what I have instructed you to do. But none of the restrictions of ihram are lifted for me until the sacrificial animals reach their appointed place.” So they did as instructed.

(1) Nadūh: a type of perfume with a diffusive fragrance. (2) Reported in full by Ibn Hazm in Hujjat al-Wadā‘ (p. 334), through Ibn Abī Shaybah’s chain. It also appears in al-Musannaf (16034) and al-Matālib al-‘Āliyah (1184), without the passage beginning “Why do you not ask your mother about this?” Ahmad (26917) reported a similar version. The chain includes Yazīd ibn Abī Ziyād, whose reliability has been questioned. (3) No. 1568. (4) The manuscripts read “Ibn Shihāb”; the correction to “Abū Shihāb” is based on Sahīh al-Bukhārī. His name is Mūsā ibn Nāfi‘ al-Asadī. See Tahdhīb al-Kamāl (29:158).
