Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

In another wording recorded by al-Bukhārī (1): We set out with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, intending nothing but Hajj. When we arrived, we circumambulated the House. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, then instructed those who had not brought sacrificial animals to leave ihram, and they did so. His wives had not brought sacrificial animals, so they too left ihram.

In another wording recorded by Muslim (2): The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came in to see me while he was angry. I said: “Who has angered you, O Messenger of Allah? May Allah consign him to the Fire!” He replied: “Do you not realize that I gave the people an instruction, yet they are hesitating? Had I known beforehand what I know now, I would not have brought sacrificial animals with me, but would have bought them instead and then left ihram as they did.”

Mālik reported (3) from Yahyā ibn Saʿīd, from ʿAmrah, who said: I heard ʿĀ’ishah say: We set out with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, with five nights remaining in Dhū al-Qaʿdah, believing that we were undertaking Hajj alone. As we approached Mecca, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, instructed anyone who had no sacrificial animal with them to leave ihram after circumambulating the House and performing the saʿy between al-Safā and al-Marwah. Yahyā said: I mentioned this hadith to al-Qāsim ibn Muhammad, and he said: “By Allah, she has related the hadith to you exactly as it happened.”

In Sahīh Muslim (4), Ibn ʿUmar reported: Hafsah told me that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, instructed his wives to leave ihram in the year of the Farewell Pilgrimage. I asked: “What has prevented you from leaving ihram?” He replied: “I have matted my hair with gum and placed a garland on my sacrificial camel, so I will not leave ihram until I slaughter the sacrificial animal.”
