Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

In the Musnad (1), Ibn ‘Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, arrived in Mecca with his Companions, having entered ihram for Hajj. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Whoever wishes may make it an ‘umrah, except those who have sacrificial animals with them.” They asked: “O Messenger of Allah! May one of us set out for Minā while his penis is still dripping with semen?” He replied: “Yes” (2). Incense smoke rose from the burners.

In the Sunan (3), al-Rabī‘ ibn Sabrah reported from his father: We set out with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. When he was (4) at ‘Usfān, Surāqah ibn Mālik al-Mudlijī said to him: “O Messenger of Allah, give us a ruling as though we were people born only today.” He replied: “Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has included an ‘umrah in your Hajj. When you arrive, whoever circumambulates the House and performs the sa‘y between al-Safā and al-Marwah has left ihram, except those who have sacrificial animals with them.”

In the two Sahīh collections, ‘Ā’ishah reported: We set out with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, mentioning nothing but Hajj … She then related the hadith, which includes: When I arrived in Mecca, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to his Companions: “Make it an ‘umrah.” The people then left ihram, except those who had sacrificial animals with them … She then related the remainder of the hadith (5).

(1) No. (4822). It was graded authentic by the author, Ahmad Shākir in Takhrīj al-Musnad (4/413), and the editors of al-Musnad. Al-Albānī identified a defect in the wording “Whoever wishes to make it an ‘umrah,” because Hammād ibn Salamah alone transmitted it. See Musnad Ahmad, al-Risālah edition (4822), and Sahīh Abī Dāwūd—al-Umm (6/26–31). (2) “He said, ‘Yes’” is omitted from k. (3) Reported by Abū Dāwūd (1801) and al-Bayhaqī (7/203). Al-Albānī graded it authentic, stating: “Authentic according to Muslim’s criteria.” See Sahīh Abī Dāwūd—al-Umm (6/59). (4) q, b, mb read: kunnā (“we were”). The adopted reading is from the remaining manuscripts and agrees with the wording in al-Sunan. (5) This is Muslim’s wording (1211/120).
