‘Abd al-Barr (1): Al-Qāsim ibn Muhammad, al-Aswad ibn Yazīd, and ‘Amrah all reported from ‘Ā’ishah accounts indicating that she had entered ihrām for Hajj, not ‘umrah. These include ‘Amrah’s report from her: “We set out with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, thinking it was Hajj and nothing else”; al-Aswad ibn Yazīd’s report to the same effect; and al-Qāsim’s report: “We recited the talbiyah with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, for Hajj” (2). He said: They judged ‘Urwah to have erred in reporting her words, “I was among those who entered ihrām for ‘umrah.”
Ismā‘īl ibn Ishāq said: These narrators—meaning al-Aswad, al-Qāsim, and ‘Amrah—all agreed on the reports we have mentioned. We therefore knew that the reports transmitted from ‘Urwah were mistaken. He said: It seems that the error arose because she was unable to circumambulate the House and leave ihrām by performing ‘umrah, as those who had not brought sacrificial animals had done. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, therefore instructed her to leave circumambulation and continue with Hajj. From this, they mistakenly supposed that she had been performing ‘umrah, had abandoned it, and had begun Hajj.
Abū ‘Umar said (3): Jābir ibn ‘Abd Allāh also reported that she had entered ihrām for ‘umrah, just as ‘Urwah reported from her (4). They said: The error in ‘Urwah’s report lay specifically in the words, “Unbraid your hair and comb it, leave the ‘umrah, and enter ihrām for Hajj.”
Hammād ibn Zayd reported from Hishām ibn ‘Urwah, from his father, who said: “More than one person told me that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to her, ‘Leave your ‘umrah, unbraid your hair and comb it, and do what the pilgrim performing Hajj does.’” Hammād thus made clear that ‘Urwah had not heard these words from ‘Ā’ishah.
