Al-Tabarī said in his book The Farewell Pilgrimage (1): “At one point along the journey, Abū Qatādah hunted a wild ass while he was not in ihrām. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, permitted his Companions to eat it after asking them, ‘Did any of you tell him to do anything or point it out to him?’” This was an error on his part, may Allah have mercy on him, for the incident involving Abū Qatādah occurred in the year of al-Hudaybiyah. This is how it is related in the two Sahīh collections (2), through his son ‘Abd Allāh, who narrated from him: “We set out with the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, in the year of al-Hudaybiyah. His Companions entered ihrām, but I did not.” He then recounted the incident of the wild ass.
