Thus, the call to tawhid and to securing it in people’s hearts obliges us not to skim over the verses without detailed explanation, as was done in the first generation. In their time, first, they grasped Arabic expressions with ease, and second, no deviations in creed had yet arisen from philosophy or kalam (speculative theology) to challenge the pristine doctrine. Our situation today is utterly different from that of the earliest Muslims, so we must not imagine that inviting people to the correct creed is now as effortless as it was then.
