(Al-Baqarah 2:146). Yet despite possessing that knowledge, it did not benefit them before Allah in the least—why? Because they did not believe him concerning his claim to prophethood and messengership. Therefore, knowledge precedes faith but is not sufficient on its own; it must be joined to belief and willing submission. The Almighty says in His conclusive revelation: “So know that there is no god but Allah, and seek forgiveness for your sin” (Muhammad 47:19).
Accordingly, when a Muslim declares, “There is no god but Allah” with his tongue, he must couple that declaration with an understanding of the phrase—first in outline, then in detail. If he comes to know it, attest to it, and inwardly believe it, he is the one to whom the hadiths I mentioned earlier truly apply, including the Prophet’s ﷺ words, referring to some of the particulars I have just clarified: “Whoever says, ‘There is no god but Allah,’ it will benefit him on some day of his life.” (1)
