Therefore, I will voice a remark—a remark I seldom make—and it is this: the condition of many Muslims today is, in certain respects, worse than that of the average Arabs in the first Days of Ignorance, because of how badly they misunderstand this blessed phrase. The pagan Arabs grasped its meaning but refused to believe in it; most Muslims today, however, utter words in which they do not truly believe. They say, “lā ilāha illā Allāh,” yet they do not really believe in its meaning (1).
For that reason, I believe the very first duty of sincere Muslim callers is to keep revolving around this phrase—first summarising, then detailing its meaning and the obligations it entails—namely, devoting every act of worship in all its forms exclusively to Allah. When Allah, exalted is He, quoted the idolaters as saying, “We worship them only so that they may bring us nearer to Allah” (Az-Zumar 3), He made every act of worship directed to anyone other than Allah a denial of the blessed phrase, lā ilāha illā Allāh.
Accordingly, I say today: there is absolutely no benefit in mobilising and organising Muslims, only to leave them in their misguidance without first making them understand this blessed phrase. Such efforts will avail them nothing in this world, let alone in the Hereafter. We know the Prophet’s ﷺ statement: “Whoever dies while testifying that there is no god but Allah, sincerely from his heart, Allah will forbid the Fire to touch his body …”
