topic should be sought in the works of Shaykh al-Islam and his disciples, for they are the best authors in these matters, and within their books the seeker will find what he is looking for. The learned ḥāfiẓ, Shaykh Abū Bakr—widely known as Ibn al-Qayyim—has written his Ghazw al-Juyūsh al-Islāmiyyah fī al-Radd ʿalā al-Jahmiyyah and his al-Ṣawāʿiq al-Mursalah ʿalā al-Dahriyyah(1) wa-l-Muʿaṭṭilah on these lofty subjects, expanding on them at great length. Such generosity and open-handedness in sharing the treasures of knowledge is their hallmark. May Allah Most High perfume their resting places.”
Shaykh Muḥammad Ḥāmid al-Fiqī said: “The finest and most devastating of Ibn al-Qayyim’s works in this field, the one whose impact is the hardest and whose blow is the most annihilating against these spurious innovations, is al-Ṣawāʿiq al-Mursalah. By Allah, it is exactly as its title proclaims: lightning bolts that Allah launched, through the pen of Ibn al-Qayyim, upon the heads of those given to deviation, error, negation, and atheism. By Allah, it leaves no word for a disputant and no ploy for a devil. It is therefore incumbent upon every Muslim who cares for his religion to read this book with reflection and deep contemplation, and to adorn himself with its precious pearls—gems that are rarely sought and scarcely found except in this surging ocean.”(2)
Shaykh ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Wakīl said in his commentary on al-Rawḍ al-Unuf (6/556) while discussing the divine attributes, such as the Hand and the Eye: “Among the best who have written on this is Imām Ibn al-Qayyim in his book al-Ṣawāʿiq al-Mursalah; refer to it.”
