Allah, exalted be He, also says: “Allah speaks the truth and He guides to the path” (al-Ahzab 33:4). Thus He has informed us that He speaks the truth and that by His very speech He guides to the way, whereas, in the view of the deniers, guidance came only through the first stirrings of their own thoughts and the products of their opinions and intellects. (1)
He, exalted is He, likewise says: “In what discourse after it will they believe?” (al-Aʿraf 7:185), and He says: “So in what discourse after Allah and His signs will they believe?” (al-Jathiyah 45:5). Yet for those deniers who strip the texts of revelation of their ability to convey certainty, faith was acquired (2) only through the discourse laid down by the philosophers, the Jahmiyyah, the Muʿtazilah, and the like: by it they believed, by it they were guided, by it they distinguished truth from falsehood, and by it their intellects and their knowledge—so they claim—were set aright.
He, Most High, further says (3): “Do they not contemplate the Quran? Had it been from other than Allah, they would surely have found in it much contradiction” (al-Nisaʾ 4:82). You will, however, find no arena more riddled with contradiction than that of the forced allegorists—their opinions, spontaneous fancies, and the refuse of their minds (4). These they dignify as decisive rational proofs and definitive demonstrations, whereas upon close scrutiny (5) they are nothing but illusory phantoms and corrosive sophistries. By means of them they have cast the Quran and the Sunnah behind their backs as though they knew nothing of them, and they have followed that concerning which “some of them inspire others with embellished speech in deception. Had your Lord willed, they would not have done it; so leave them and that which they fabricate, so that the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter may incline toward it, be pleased with it, and so that they may commit…” (al-Anʿam 6:112-113).
