Also, in the Musnad and other collections (1) there is a report narrated by Abū Hurayrah from the Prophet ﷺ: “When Allah created Adam and breathed into him the spirit (2), he sneezed and said, al-ḥamdu li-llāh (all praise belongs to Allah). Thus he praised Allah by Allah’s permission, whereupon his Lord said to him, ‘May your Lord show you mercy, O Adam.’ He then said to him, ‘Go to those angels—a group of them who are sitting—and say: al-salāmu ʿalaykum (peace be upon you).’ He went and said it, and they replied, ‘Wa ʿalaykum al-salām wa raḥmatu-llāhi wa barakātuhu (and upon you be peace, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings).’ He then returned to his Lord, who said, ‘This shall be your greeting and the greeting of your descendants among themselves.’ Then Allah—His hands being closed—said, ‘Choose whichever of the two you wish.’ Adam replied, ‘I choose the right hand of my Lord, and both of my Lord’s hands are right, blessed.’ He then opened it, and there in it were Adam and his offspring …” and he related the remainder of the ḥadīth.
ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “Allah created Adam, then wiped his back with His right hand and brought forth from him a progeny. He said, ‘I have created these for Paradise, and they will act according to the deeds of the people of Paradise.’ He then wiped his back again and brought forth another progeny, and said, ‘I have created these for the Fire, and they will act according to the deeds of the people of the Fire.’” (3)
