Whenever the early scholars saw someone go to extremes in denying likeness while failing to affirm the divine attributes, they would label him “a Jahmi muʿaṭṭil (a Jahmite who nullifies the attributes).” Such language is found abundantly in their writings. To this very day the Jahmiyyah and the Muʿtazilah brand anyone who affirms even a single attribute as a mushabbih (anthropomorphist)—a fabrication and a slander on their part. Some of them went so far as to hurl this accusation at the very prophets—may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon them all. Thumāmah ibn Ashras, one of the leading figures of the Jahmiyyah, even said:
