“If he asks, ‘What proof do you have that Allah possesses a face and a hand?’ he is answered with His words: ‘Only the Face of your Lord—majestic and honorable—will remain’ [55:72] and His words: ‘What prevented you from prostrating to that which I created with My two hands?’ [38:75]. Thus He has affirmed for Himself a face and a hand.
If the objector then says, ‘Why do you reject the idea that His face and hand are bodily organs, when you understand nothing of a face or a hand except as an organ?’ we reply: This does not follow—just as it does not follow that, because we cannot conceive of a living, knowing, powerful being except as a body, we must therefore declare Allah, exalted be He, to be a body. Nor does it follow that everything which subsists in and of itself must be a substance, simply because in our experience nothing subsists independently except a substance. The same answer applies if they contend that His knowledge, life, speech, hearing, sight, and the rest of His attributes must be accidents, adducing the mere fact of their existence as evidence.
He goes on: If the questioner asks, ‘Do you say that He is in every place?’
