and the narration, “When Allah created Adam He passed His hand over his back,” along with other reports of this sort that he listed.

Al-Bayhaqi then said: “As for the early generations of this ummah, they offered no interpretation of the verses and reports we have recorded in this chapter.” He made the same observation concerning the divine istiwāʾ (rising) over the Throne and the rest of the tradition-based attributes, even though he does transmit the view of some later scholars.
