I examined the avenues of kalām (dialectical theology) and the various philosophical systems, yet I found in neither a remedy for the ailing nor a drink for the thirsty. The way that lies closest to the truth is the way of the Qur’an. In its affirmations I recite: “The Most Merciful rose over the Throne” (20:5) and “To Him the good word ascends” (35:10). In its negations I recite: “Nothing is comparable to Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing” (42:11) and “They cannot encompass Him in knowledge” (20:110). Whoever has tasted what I have tasted will know what I have come to know.
