for embracing the Jahmī doctrine. When the man claimed to have repented, he was brought before Hishām so that he might set him free. Hishām said, “Praise be to Allah for repentance.” He then tested him, asking, “Do you testify that Allah is above the Throne, separate from His creation?” The man replied, “I testify that Allah is above the Throne, but I do not know what ‘separate from His creation’ means.” Hishām ordered, “Return him to the prison, for he has not repented.”
Statement of Yaḥyā ibn Muʿādh al-Rāzī:
It was also narrated from Yaḥyā ibn Muʿādh al-Rāzī that he said, “Allah is upon the Throne, separate from creation, and He has encompassed everything in knowledge and numbered all things precisely. No one doubts this doctrine except a contemptible, misguided Jahmī—doomed and full of misgivings—who mixes Allah with His creation and blends His essence with filth and foulness.”
