Imam Mālik’s Statement on al-istiwāʾ:
Among those reports is what Abū Shaykh al-Aṣbahānī and Abū Bakr al-Bayhaqī relate from Yaḥyā ibn Yaḥyā, who said: “We were sitting with Mālik ibn Anas when a man entered and asked, ‘Abū ʿAbd Allāh, the Almighty says, “The Most Merciful rose over the Throne” (Tā Hā 20:5); how did He rise?’ Mālik lowered his head until beads of sweat appeared on him, then he replied, ‘al-istiwaʾ (establishment over the Throne) is not unknown; its how is beyond comprehension; believing in it is obligatory; inquiring about it is an innovation. I see you only as an innovator.’ He then ordered that the man be removed.”
