The Companions—may Allah be pleased with them—were indeed apprehensive that the Hour would come upon them. This became plainly evident when the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—described the Dajjāl to them. In the hadith of al-Nawwās ibn Samān—may Allah be pleased with him—he said:
One morning, the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—spoke of the Dajjāl, at times portraying him as insignificant and at others emphasizing the gravity of his threat, until we thought that he was in the grove of date palms. When we returned to him, he saw the effect this had upon us and asked, “What is the matter with you?” We replied, “O Messenger of Allah! This morning you spoke of the Dajjāl, at times portraying him as insignificant and at others emphasizing the gravity of his threat, until we thought that he was in the grove of date palms.” He said, “Something other than the Dajjāl is what I fear more for you. If he emerges while I am among you, I shall contend with him on your behalf. But if he emerges when I am no longer among you, each person must contend with him for himself, and Allah will watch over every Muslim in my stead.” (1)
Many of the signs of the Hour have already appeared, and what the Chosen Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—foretold has come to pass. With each passing day, the believers’ faith in him and affirmation of his truthfulness increase, as further proofs of his prophethood and signs of his veracity appear—proofs that require Muslims to hold fast to this upright religion.
How could their faith fail to increase when they see these matters of the unseen, foretold by the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—occurring exactly as he said they would? Every one of these signs that comes to pass is a manifest miracle of the Prophet of this nation—may Allah bless him and grant him peace. Woe, then woe, to those who deny his message, turn away from it, or doubt it!
The importance of this study is especially evident at a time when some contemporary writers have begun to cast doubt on the appearance of the unseen events foretold by the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—which must be believed, including the signs of the Hour. Some deny certain signs, while others subject them to false interpretations!
