4 — The Plague of Amwās (1):
In the previously cited hadith of Awf ibn Mālik, the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “Count six signs that will precede the Hour: … (among them he mentioned:) then widespread death (2) will sweep through you like a fatal disease among sheep (3)” (4).
Ibn Hajar said: “It is said that this sign manifested in the Plague of Amwās during the caliphate of Umar, after the conquest of Jerusalem” (5).
In 18 AH—according to the well-known view held by the majority (6)—a plague broke out in the district of Amwās and then spread throughout the land of Syria. Many people died in it, including numerous Companions—may Allah be pleased with them—and others. It is said that the number of Muslims who died reached twenty-five thousand. Among the renowned figures who died in it was Abū Ubayda Āmir ibn al-Jarrāh, the trustee of this nation—may Allah be pleased with him (7).
