extending them” (1).
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, also said: “I was sent with the first breath of the Hour” (2).
He, peace and blessings be upon him, also said: “Your allotted span—compared with that of the nations that have passed—is only the time between the afternoon prayer and sunset” (3).
Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him and his father, reported: We were sitting with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, after the afternoon prayer, while the sun was over Quayqiān (4). He said: “Your lifespans, compared with the lifespans of those who

(2) Al-Albānī said: “It was narrated by al-Dūlābī in *al-Kunā* (1/23) and Ibn Manda in *al-Marifa* (2/234/2), through Abū Hāzim, from Abū Jubayra, who attributed it directly to the Prophet. Its chain of transmission is authentic, and all its narrators are trustworthy. There is disagreement over whether Abū Jubayra was a Companion, but al-Hāfiz Ibn Hajar concluded in *al-Taqrīb* that he was.” *Silsilat al-Ahādīth al-Sahīha*, 2/467, hadith 808.

(4) *Quayqiān*—with a *u* after the first *q* and an *i* after the second, following the diminutive form—is a mountain about twelve miles south of Mecca. It was named Quayqiān because, when Jurhum fought among themselves, the clatter of weapons there was intense. It appears that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, made this statement either during the Farewell Pilgrimage or during the Conquest of Mecca; Ibn Umar attended both alongside the Companions.
