Ibn Uyayna said (1): “It will emerge when the imam leaves Jamʿ by night. A forerunner is appointed only to inform the people that the Beast has not emerged” (2).
2 — It will emerge three times: first, it will emerge in a desert region and then disappear; next, it will emerge in one of the villages; and finally, it will appear in the Sacred Mosque (3).
(1) Ibn Uyayna was the eminent imam, authority, and hadith master Abū Muhammad Sufyān ibn Uyayna ibn Maymūn al-Hilālī al-Kūfī, the hadith scholar of the Sacred Precinct. Born in 107 AH, he studied under al-Zuhrī and scholars of his generation. Those who narrated from him included al-Shāfiʿī, Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Ibn Maʿīn, and their contemporaries. The leading scholars unanimously regarded his narrations as authoritative because of his strong memory and trustworthiness. He performed Hajj for seventy years.
Al-Shāfiʿī said: “Were it not for Mālik and Sufyān, the knowledge of the Hijaz would have disappeared.”
He also said: “I never saw anyone possess the scholarly qualifications that Sufyān possessed, nor did I see anyone more reluctant than he to issue fatwas.”
He died in 198 AH. May Allah have mercy on him.
See his biography in *Tadhkirat al-Huffāz* (1/262–265), *Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb* (4/117–122), and *al-Khulāsa* (pp. 145–146).
(2) *Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid* (8/7–8).
Al-Haythamī said: “Its narrators are trustworthy.”
(3) The hadith of Hudhayfa ibn Usayd recorded by al-Hākim states that the Beast will “emerge three times.” After quoting the hadith in full, he said: “This is an authentic hadith that meets the criteria of the two Shaykhs, al-Bukhārī and Muslim, although neither of them recorded it.” Al-Dhahabī concurred with him in *Talkhīs al-Mustadrak* (4/484–485).
Al-Tabarānī and al-Hākim also narrated from Hudhayfa a report stating: “It will emerge three times: it will emerge from the farthest reaches of Yemen, then near Mecca, and finally from the Sacred Mosque, between the Black Stone Corner and the gate of Banū Makhzūm.”
However, the chain of this narration contains Talha ibn Amr al-Hadramī, who is weak. The documentation of this hadith was given earlier.
