- What Kind of Creature Is the Beast of the Earth?
Scholars differed over the identity of the Beast of the Earth. Here are some of their views:
First: Al-Qurtubī said, “The first opinion is that it is the calf of Sālih’s she-camel. This is the soundest opinion, and Allah knows best” (1).
He cited as evidence for this opinion a report narrated by Abū Dāwūd al-Tayālisī from Hudhayfa ibn Usayd al-Ghifārī, who said: The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—spoke of the Beast … (he then related the hadith, which included the words:) “They will suddenly find it bellowing between the Corner and the Station” (2).
= It is also recorded in *Sunan al-Tirmidhī*, Book of Tafsīr, “Surah al-Naml” (9/44); al-Tirmidhī said, “This is a *hasan* (good) hadith.” It is likewise recorded in *al-Mustadrak* by al-Hākim (4/485–486).
Al-Albānī graded it “weak” in *Daīf al-Jāmi al-Saghīr* (3/26), hadith 3412. He did so because its chain of transmission contains Ali ibn Zayd ibn Judān, whom he regarded as weak.
Shaykh Ahmad Shākir, however, regarded him as trustworthy. In his annotation on *al-Musnad* (2/122), hadith 783, he said: “Ali ibn Zayd is Ibn Judān. As noted earlier, we regard him as trustworthy. Scholars differ concerning him, but in our view the stronger judgment is that he is trustworthy. Al-Tirmidhī graded several hadiths narrated through him as authentic.”

(2) *Minhat al-Mabūd: Tartīb Musnad al-Tayālisī*, chapter “The Emergence of the Beast” (2/220–221), by al-Sāātī. Its wording is *tarnū* (“it gazes”), and it does not contain *targhū* (“it bellows”).
Al-Hākim also narrated it in *al-Mustadrak* (4/484) and said: “This hadith has an authentic chain of transmission. It is the clearest hadith concerning the Beast of the Earth, and neither al-Bukhārī nor Muslim included it.”
I say: The hadith is weak because both al-Tayālisī’s and al-Hākim’s chains of transmission contain Talha ibn Amr =
