Ashrat al-Saah - al-WabilYusuf al-Wabil

said: “Hasten to perform deeds before six things … (and among them he mentioned:) the Beast of the Earth” (1).

  1. Imam Ahmad and al-Tirmidhī narrated from Abū Hurayra—may Allah be pleased with him—that the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “The Beast will emerge with the staff of Moses—peace be upon him—and the ring of Solomon—peace be upon him. It will mark (2) the disbeliever with the ring—Affān (3), one of the hadith’s narrators, said: ‘the disbeliever’s nose’—and brighten the believer’s face (4) with the staff, until those sharing a dining table (5) gather around it, one saying, ‘O believer!’ and another saying, ‘O disbeliever!’” (6).
(1) *Sahīh Muslim*, chapter “Remaining Hadiths Concerning the Dajjāl” (18/781, with al-Nawawī’s commentary). (2) “It will mark the disbeliever”: that is, it will brand him. The expression derives from branding a camel from its nose to one cheek. Such a brand is called *al-khitām*. The meaning is that it will leave a distinctive mark on his nose. See *Lisān al-Arab* (12/188), *Tartīb al-Qāmūs* (2/79–80), and *al-Nihāya fī Gharīb al-Hadīth* (2/50). (3) He was Abū Uthmān, Affān ibn Muslim ibn Abd Allāh al-Saffār al-Basrī. He was trustworthy, highly accurate, an authority, and a prolific hadith narrator. He died in 220 AH—may Allah have mercy on him. See *Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb* (7/230–234). (4) “It brightens the believer’s face”: *al-jalā*, with final *ā*, denotes the recession of the front hairline. Here, however, the verb means that it polishes and whitens the face. See *Tartīb al-Qāmūs* (1/523) and *Tuhfat al-Ahwadhī* (9/44). (5) *Al-khiwān* is the table or tray on which food is placed for eating. See *al-Nihāya fī Gharīb al-Hadīth* (2/89–90). (6) *Musnad al-Imām Ahmad* (15/79–82), hadith 7924, edited by Ahmad Shākir, who said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic.” =
