was not the actual Smoke that will occur when the signs constituting the portents of the Hour appear.
Al-Qurtubī said: “Mujāhid (1) said: Ibn Masūd used to say, ‘There are two occurrences of smoke. One has already passed, while the one that remains will fill everything between heaven and earth. The believer will experience it only as a cold, whereas it will pierce the unbeliever’s ears.’” (2)
Ibn Jarīr said: “Furthermore, there is nothing objectionable in His having inflicted upon the unbelievers whom He threatened with this warning the very thing He threatened them with, and in His later inflicting a smoke upon others, in keeping with the reports that have likewise reached us from the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace. Reports from the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—have corroborated one another that this will indeed occur. What Abdullah ibn Masūd narrated from him has already occurred; thus, both reports narrated from the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—are authentic.” (3)
