Chapter Six: The Smoke

The appearance of the Smoke near the end of time is one of the major signs of the Hour established by the Quran and Sunnah.

Evidence of Its Appearance:

A. Evidence from the Noble Quran:

Allah Most High says:

“Then await the Day when the sky will bring forth visible smoke, (10) enveloping the people. This is a painful punishment.” [al-Dukhān: 10–11]

The meaning is: O Muhammad, await what will befall these unbelievers on the Day when the sky brings forth clear, visible smoke that envelops and encompasses the people. At that time, it will be said to them, “This is a painful punishment,” by way of rebuke and reproach; or they will say this to one another. (1)

Scholars hold two views concerning what is meant by this Smoke and whether it has already occurred or is one of the signs still awaited:

الفصل السّادس: الدُّخان ظهور الدُّخان في آخر الزّمان من علامات السّاعة الكبرى الّتي دلَّ عليها الكتاب والسُّنَّة. * أدلة ظهوره: أ- الأدلَّة من القرآن الكريم: قال الله تعالى: ﴿فَارْتَقِبْ يَوْمَ تَأْتِي السَّمَاءُ بِدُخَانٍ مُبِينٍ (١٠) يَغْشَى النَّاسَ هَذَا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ﴾ [الدخان: ١٠ - ١١]. والمعنى: انتظر يا محمّد بهؤلاء الكفار يوم تأتي السَّماء بدخان مبينٍ واضحٍ يغشى النَّاس ويعمُّهم، وعند ذلك يُقال لهم: هذا عذابٌ أليمٌ؛ تقريعًا لهم وتوبيخًا، أو يقول بعضهم لبعض ذلك (١). وفي المراد بهذا الدُّخان؟ وهل وقع؟ أو هو من الآيات المرتقبة؟ قولان للعلّماء:
