Ashrat al-Saah - al-WabilYusuf al-Wabil
  • Their Description:

As described in the hadiths, they resemble their racial kin among the Mongol Turks, whose speech is indistinct (1): they have small eyes, short, flat noses, reddish hair, and broad faces resembling leather-covered shields. Their features and complexions are like those of the Turks (2).

Imam Ahmad narrated from Ibn Harmalah, from his maternal aunt, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, delivered a sermon while his finger was bandaged because of a scorpion sting. He said: “You say, ‘There is no enemy left,’ yet you will continue fighting enemies until Gog and Magog come: broad-faced and small-eyed, with grizzled hair at their crowns (3), swarming down from every elevation, their faces resembling leather-covered shields” (4).

Ibn Hajar mentioned several reports describing them, but these reports are weak,

(1) *Al-ghutm*: *al-ghutma* means indistinctness of speech. A man is described as *aghtam* or *ghutmā* when he cannot speak clearly at all. *Lisān al-Arab* (12/433). (2) See *Al-Nihāya: al-Fitan wa-l-Malāhim* (1/153), ed. Dr. Tāhā Zaynī. (3) *Al-shiāf* is the plural of *shaafa*, meaning the hair at the crown of the head. The intended meaning is hair streaked with gray. See *Al-Nihāya fī Gharīb al-Hadīth* (2/481–482) and *Lisān al-Arab* (9/177). (4) *Musnad al-Imām Ahmad* (5/271, with *Muntakhab al-Kanz* in the margin). Al-Haythamī said: “It was narrated by Ahmad and al-Tabarānī, and the narrators in both chains are narrators of the *Sahīh*.” *Majma al-Zawāid* (8/6).
