but the correct view, both in meaning and chain of transmission, is the one we have mentioned.” (1).
B — Evidence for His Descent from the Purified Sunnah
The evidence from the Sunnah for the descent of Jesus (peace be upon him) is abundant and mass-transmitted. Some of it has already been mentioned, and here I shall cite only a selection to avoid undue length:
1 — Among this evidence is the report narrated by al-Bukhārī and Muslim from Abū Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him), who said that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: “By Him in whose hand is my soul, the son of Mary will soon descend among you as a just judge. He will break the cross, kill the swine, put an end to war, and wealth will become so abundant that no one will accept it, until a single prostration will be better than this world and all it contains.”
Abū Hurayra then said: “Recite, if you wish: ‘There is none among the People of the Book but will surely believe in him before his death, and on the Day of Resurrection he will be a witness against them.’” (2).
This is Abū Hurayra’s interpretation of the verse: that there will be those among the People of the Book who will believe in Jesus (peace be upon him) before his death, when he descends at the end of time, as previously explained.
2 — Al-Bukhārī and Muslim also narrated from Abū Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him), who said that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: “What will your condition be when the son of Mary descends among you and your imam is from among you?!” (3).
