Ibn Sayyad, when did your eye become like that?’ He replied, ‘I do not know, by the Most Merciful.’ I said, ‘You are lying—it is in your own head.’ He then rubbed it and snorted three times.’” (1)
A similar version of this account, narrated by Imam Muslim, has already been mentioned (2).
It appears to me from al-Shawkānī’s words that he sides with those who maintain that Ibn Sayyad is the Great Dajjal.
In discussing the hadith of Tamīm, al-Bayhaqī (3) said: “It shows that the Great Dajjal who will emerge at the end of time is not Ibn Sayyad. Ibn Sayyad was instead one of the lying impostors whose emergence the Prophet ﷺ foretold, most of whom have already appeared.
“It seems that those who categorically maintain that Ibn Sayyad is the Dajjal had not heard the account of Tamīm. Otherwise, reconciling the two accounts is exceedingly difficult. How could someone who was approaching puberty during the Prophet’s lifetime, and whom the Prophet ﷺ met and questioned, have become, near the end of that same lifetime, an elderly man imprisoned on an island in the sea, bound in iron, and seeking information about whether the Prophet ﷺ had yet appeared?!
“The preferable interpretation is therefore that they were unaware of it.
